Since 1950, World Health Day has been celebrated every year on April 7 on a topical issue considered a priority by the WHO. This year, the theme is “Our planet. Our health. which is in the spotlight.
It is therefore the links between sustainable development and health that are highlighted… and there are many! Here are some examples: quality of water, air, quantity of food, security of housing… Knowing this, we understand why climate change has strong effects on the health of the inhabitants of our planet. The WHO expects climate change to cause nearly 250,000 additional deaths per year due to malaria, malnutrition, diarrhea and even heat stress. Our portfolio will also be affected by climate change, since the cost of direct health damage will be between 2 and 4 billion dollars per year in 2030. Of course, the most impacted areas will be the poorest, least provided in health facilities.
We can therefore conclude from all this that yes, reducing our greenhouse gas emissions has a real positive effect on health! However, the question remains: Are we capable of reimagining a world where everyone has access to clean air, clean water and food? In any case, Morija’s efforts go in this direction and directly attack health determinants such as access to food, drinking water or medical care.
Much progress is being made in Burkina Faso by our nutritional centers which take care of children suffering from malnutrition and educate their mothers on health, nutrition and hygiene. The Wash Sakoula project aims, among other things, to improve sustainable access to safe drinking water for populations in the peri-urban area of Sakoula. For its part, the Medico-Surgical Center of Kaya restores autonomy to people with disabilities through physiotherapy sessions, the fitting of prostheses, orthoses, relief devices or personalized splints or even through operations orthopedic surgeries.
Thousands of people, many of them children, are benefiting from health access programs, but also from emergency aid and development aid.
