Floods in Chad: 5.5 million people in need

At the end of June, torrential rains fell on the country for several weeks, which caused an unprecedented rise in water levels and floods. More than 341,000 people are affected.

These weather events add to a tense political context: in 2022, Chad experienced a period of trouble marked by both elections and armed attacks. The rebel forces, led by the “Front for Change and Concord in Chad” (FACT), entered Chadian territory on April 11, 2021, election day, with the stated objective of marching on N’Djamena.

In addition to these political and security instabilities, the country ranks 187th out of 189 countries on the human development index. This makes it one of the poorest countries on the planet.

The direct consequence of these floods is that currently 5.5 million Chadians require emergency humanitarian aid. The Chadian authorities have declared a food emergency due to the deterioration of the food and nutritional situation.

Morija in Chad
For several months, Morija has been developing a project to help agriculture in the country in order to promote local production through agroecological practices in order to fight against the food stress suffered by the population, while preserving its ecosystem. The objective of this program is to prepare farmers to face such climatic episodes which will unfortunately increase in the future years.

Morija is currently analyzing the situation in order to offer emergency aid to the Chadian population in this period of unrest and instability.
