Chad: floods and food insecurity

Unprecedented floods have occurred in Chad. In 2022, the country recorded its heaviest rainfall in 30 years. President Mahamat Déby Itno has declared a “state of emergency” to “better contain and manage” this natural disaster situation.

These rains caused flooding, which destroyed crops, roads and homes.

This confirms that extreme weather events are intensifying in the Sahel region, which is one of the hotspots of climate change in the world.

In the country, more than 1 million people are affected by these floods which cover 18 out of 23 provinces in Chad.

Nearly 465,030 hectares of crops were destroyed.

The country was already suffering from food shortages caused by the Ukrainian crisis and from security and political instability.

Morija in Chad

For several months, Morija has been developing a project to help agriculture in the country in order to promote local production through agroecological practices in order to fight against the food stress suffered by the population, while preserving its ecosystem.

The objective of this program is to prepare farmers to face such climatic episodes which will unfortunately increase in the coming years.

Morija is currently analyzing the situation in order to offer emergency aid to the Chadian population in this period of unrest and instability.
