In Burkina Faso, in certain regions of the country where access to education is limited, the basic principles of hygiene are sometimes unknown to the populations. Why wash your hands, use adapted toilets and sanitation systems… these are the questions that the hygiene promoters trained by Morija will be able to develop as close as possible to the populations, during community sessions.
Hygiene promoters are essential in the strategy to combat the contamination of water-borne diseases, which are responsible for the majority of deaths of children under 5 in the Sahel.
Morija trains promoters who will be referents for hygiene issues in their community. The training, which lasts 2 days, consists of transmitting the basics of hygiene education so that they can be retransmitted to the population during awareness sessions led by hygiene promoters.
48 hygiene trainers were trained in 2022. They will have an impact on hundreds of people in their community and on their children.
Sanitation infrastructure
In addition to training hygiene promoters, Morija provides boreholes, latrines and handwashing facilities closer to the poorest communities.
In the region of Sakoula, Burkina Faso, where Morija works, more than 50% of the population has to walk more than one kilometer to fetch water while more than 75% of the inhabitants have less than 20 liters of water. water per day.
Here are the achievements that Morija plans to make by 2024 in Sakoula:
- Creation and rehabilitation of 45 boreholes
- Construction of 1,000 family latrines
- Construction of an AEPS system in 2024
- Construction of 1,000 hand washing devices at home.
- Construction of 30 public latrines.
This will make it possible to reduce infant mortality, reduce the number of patients contaminated by diseases transmitted by water and improve the health and education of the populations.
