Cécile, a saved life in our nutrition centers

We would like to share the poignant testimony of Cécile, a young infant from a family in the village of Poi, located 45 km from the Morija Nutrition Center in Nobéré, in the Nahouri province in southern Burkina Faso.

During pregnancy, Awa SAWADOGO, Cécile’s mother, was ill and undergoing treatment. Her condition raised concerns to the extent that the treating doctor formally prohibited her from continuing to breastfeed her child during her hospitalization.

Little Cécile had to be abruptly weaned and entrusted to her maternal grandmother. Unfortunately, Awa, the mother, did not survive.
The grandmother fed Cécile with foods unsuitable for her age, such as red sorghum porridge without the necessary nutrients.

The child’s condition quickly declined, showing signs of malnutrition with weight loss. Faced with the deterioration of the child’s health, Cécile’s family turned to the local health center, and Cécile was referred to the Morija Nutrition Center for malnutrition. Upon her arrival on May 9, 2023, 8-month-old Cécile weighed only 3.3 kg, while according to WHO, the growth curve for a girl of this age should be between 6.2 and 10.2 kg. Her case was severe.

Thanks to appropriate care, Cécile gained weight significantly within a few weeks, and by the end of May, she was out of danger.
Unfortunately, this type of case remains common in Burkina Faso, underscoring the importance of your ongoing support for our Nutrition projects. It is thanks to your support that we can save children like Cécile every day.
