Kaya CMC: an example of north-south collaboration

The recruitment of orthopedic surgeon Christian Nezien within the Kaya Medico-Surgical Center in Burkina Faso has made it possible to take an important step: to set up a high-performance service that operates independently thanks to local staff.

This empowerment constitutes a decisive phase in the development of the Center, which will enable it to respond, in the long term, to the strong demand for local surgery.

These first months have been intensive! The daily presence of the surgeon contrasts with the historical habits of the Center, which until then benefited from voluntary missions of Swiss or Dutch surgeons, limited to 8 weeks of presence per year. In the meantime, patients had to wait!

Since his arrival (September 2020), Dr. Nezien has carried out 486 consultations and has been able to operate on 67 patients, thanks to the support of a medical team well trained for 10 years by our European missionaries. Each case is entered in software, to which Dr. Hügli and Dr. Tseng (European surgeons) are connected, which allows precise technical exchanges with Dr. Nezien on diagnosis, operating methods and patient follow-up.

All the operations performed were successful, as no patient had postoperative complications. The rehabilitation of the patients continues with an experienced physiotherapy team, which takes care of the patients after their interventions.
