Violence in Burkina Faso: civilians killed and thousands displaced…

In early May, 45 civilians were killed and 17,500 people fled fighting zones in Burkina Faso.

Terrorist attacks continued in three separate areas of the country. On May 9, terrorists attacked the village of FIRKA, 45 km from Kaya, where our team had visited a young patient treated by Dr. Hügli (see our newsletter n°345 and 346), Djibrill, and the population was unfortunately dispersed. On May 19, the locality was again the scene of exchanges of fire. Elsewhere, houses were often burned and health centers ransacked.

IDPs are fleeing for their lives to find relative safety in large urban centers, which are overwhelmed by the influx of distressed families.

“In just over two years, violence in Burkina Faso has forced more than 1.14 million people to flee their homes in search of safety. At the same time, the Sahel country continues to host more than 20,000 refugees and asylum seekers, mostly from Mali. ” (Source UN)

Morija continues its efforts to help these families with the distribution of food kits in the Kaya region, an urban area with a very high density of IDPs. In 2020, Morija was able to help more than 40,000 IDPs, but there is still much to be done.
