Sahel: This year, 15 million people will depend on humanitarian aid

The humanitarian, political and security crisis currently unfolding in the Sahel region and affecting Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger is unfortunately still worsening.
Terrorist groups continue their abuses against already very fragile populations who are forced to flee.
The UN estimates that 15 million people will need humanitarian assistance this year, 4 million more than in 2021.
This observation is alarming. In this crisis, several factors come into play:
  • Terrorist conflicts and current political instability (religious and ethnic tensions)
  • Climate change causing stress on food supply
  • The lack of possibility of sustainable development due to lack of means
In 8 years, the number of refugees in the Sahel region has multiplied by 10. From 217,000 people in 2013 to 2.1 million in 2021. Indicators show that this figure will continue to increase, which will require a intensification of the humanitarian aid provided in order to help families who have lost everything and who have fled to save their lives.

Morija in Burkina Faso:

Burkina Faso is the most affected country in the Sahel region, 6 out of 10 displaced people in the region are Burkinabe. The country alone had more than 1.5 million internal refugees at the end of 2021.
Morija is mobilizing to provide emergency humanitarian aid to displaced families in regions of the country with a high density of refugees.
