Hunger in a warming world

Climate disruption has a direct link with food security problems that are worsening in certain areas of the planet.

These areas are called “climate hotspots of the world”, because global warming affects them most strongly: Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Guatemala, Haiti, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, Somalia and Zimbabwe.

Today, 48 million people suffer from hunger in these countries (compared to 21 million in 2016, or 42% more), and 18 million of them are on the verge of starvation.

In Burkina Faso, several causes are responsible for an unprecedented food crisis:

Armed conflicts make millions internally displaced, causing food stress in overpopulated regions.
Natural disasters (longer droughts and floods) due to climate change have an impact on poor harvests.
The global economic crisis and the rise in food prices are making certain staple foods inaccessible to the poorest populations.
Most of the internally displaced are women and children. Very vulnerable, they live in communities that welcome them where there is only very limited access to water, healthcare and food.

Some infants find themselves in our Nutrition Centers (CREN) in critical situations. Conflicts slow the flow of patients to health centers, which increases mortality rates.

An unbalanced world

Meanwhile, rich countries continue to be big polluters. Awareness is difficult, and actions are struggling to be put in place, so that the poorest countries are no longer the first victims of polluting and CO2-emitting industries.

Benchmark: the oil industry has generated an average of $2.8 billion in profits per day for the past 50 years. It would therefore have been enough for 18 days of these colossal profits to cover the entirety of the humanitarian appeal of 48.8 billion dollars made by the UN for 2022.

Morija encourages all people with the ability to redistribute this wealth to support its humanitarian projects in sub-Saharan Africa in order to share its values of solidarity, dignity and compassion.

If you recognize yourself in these universal values, you can donate in seconds with your preferred payment method to our humanitarian aid projects here: https://www.morija.org/faire-un-don/

Together, we will make a difference for a fairer world.
