World Refugee Day 2023: Sub-Saharan Africa faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis

World Refugee Day is an opportunity to highlight the plight of displaced people around the world. This year, sub-Saharan Africa is particularly affected by a humanitarian crisis on an unprecedented scale. Several countries in the region, including Burkina Faso, where Morija operates, are facing an alarming increase in the number of refugees fleeing conflict and violence.

In Burkina Faso, since 2015, armed terrorist groups have spread terror by attacking villages in the north and east of the country. Faced with this threat, the inhabitants were forced to flee for their lives, leaving everything behind. Official figures are alarming: as of April 28, 2023, more than 1.9 million internally displaced people have been identified in Burkina Faso. This situation highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

Morija plays a crucial role in helping these displaced families. In collaboration with a local partner, Morija is as close as possible to the affected populations to provide them with rapid food assistance. Our action is guided by a fundamental principle: to help all those who are in need and deprived, without distinction of ethnicity, race or religion.

“Since the beginning of the year, we have been able to help more than 4,650 displaced people by distributing food kits to them in the Commune of Ourgou-Manega, north of Ouagadougou. In this Commune, Morija is the only NGO present to bring aid to the most destitute. Having fled and abandoned everything, hundreds of families need emergency food aid. They need your support to survive and feed their children in this tragic situation.” Elise Berchoire, Program Manager Morija

Every month, thanks to the donations received, Morija buys and distributes essential food kits directly to the displaced people. Each kit includes 25 kg of rice, 5 kg of sugar, 5 liters of oil and 5 kg of pasta. This regular aid responds to a vital need of the displaced population, which finds itself without financial resources and deprived of the elements essential to their subsistence, such as water, food and clothing.

Your financial support can make a real difference. With a donation of CHF 45.-, the price of a good restaurant in Switzerland, you can feed an entire family in need for an entire month. Your generosity can save lives.
