Bocage Family Fields: An Innovative Approach to Food Security in Burkina Faso

In the commune of Nobéré, located in the Central-South region of Burkina Faso, Morija is developing an innovative project called Bocage Family Fields (CFB). The project implements an agricultural method within communities that brings together an entire ecosystem in fields cultivated by families practicing subsistence farming.

Faced with the increasingly adverse effects of climate change and land pressures, farmers in the region are confronted with threats to their food security. Bocage Family Fields offer an innovative solution to these challenges, enabling farmers to feed their families while preserving the environment, soil quality, and water resources.

The Farming Method:

Bocage Family Fields are designed to create an agro-silvo-pastoral ecosystem that combines land cultivation, forestry, and livestock. This method provides various benefits to the project’s beneficiary farmers. By integrating fruit trees with staple crops, Bocage Family Fields enhance soil fertility and increase agricultural yields. The shade provided by the trees also contributes to water conservation in the soil.

A Resilient Agricultural Approach:

Bocage Family Fields allow farmers to produce a greater variety of staple crops to meet their dietary needs. Surplus harvests are sold in local markets, providing income to farmers and improving the food security of their community.

Additionally, Bocage Family Fields preserve the environment, empower farmers to adapt their crops to climate changes, and ensure the food security of their families and communities.
